Back in time a thousand years
People didn't travel far.
Got directions from the sun
Or a familiar star.

When the weather became cloudy
It would hide the light both night and day
Without some landmarks to guide them
Ships at sea just couldn't find their way.

The compass was invented
Navigation came to be.
Now there was a simple way
To guide the ships at sea.

On a piece of cork

Magnetic piece of iron
Pointing northward....showed the way.

Compass, its simplicity
Has changed our history.
All the sailors now would know
Directions they could go.
New lands and countries discovered
As brave men explored the new frontier.
It was the compass that led them.
The 'age of discovery' was here!

Christopher Columbus, with three ships and crew,
Discovered America in fourteen ninety two.
Ferdinand and Isabella, the rulers of Spain
Financed the journey...with hope of wealth and fame.

Christopher Columbus, admiral of the sea.
Sailed west to the Indies...made a great discovery.
A new continent which came to be

With compass to guide them, they sailed Westerly.
Courageous men ventured into unknown seas.
Thirty-three days they traveled...imagine their joy
When a watchful sailor shouted, "there's land ahoy!"

For the Virginia Company.
To settle, explore, and then to govern
A new settlement across the sea.

The roots of democracy.
The first representative government
Gave men rights and liberty.

Captain John Smith and Pocahontas
Both the kind of friends we all should be.

Concern for the others saved the colony!

THE PILGRIMS

The Mayflower sailed in 1620
Came to the New World 'cross the sea.
On board were Pilgrims...searching for a place
Where they could raise their family.
One hundred and two were passengers
Each one desiring to be free.
They landed in Massachusetts
And started the Plymouth Colony.

The Pilgrims had found a place of refuge
Where they could worship as they please
To give thanks for a plentiful harvest
They held a feast and that is how....
Our Thanksgiving came to be!

The Pilgrims learned from the Indians
How to hunt wild turkey and deer.
They learned to fish and to plant corn,
Had food to eat throughout the year.
And with a plentiful harvest
They gave thanks in a special way.
Had a feast and ate the turkey.
It was the first Thanksgiving Day.

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS

Wilbur and Orville Wright worked together on a large box kite.
Built some gliders and watched them fly...like an Eagle in the sky.
In the year 1903, ...important date in our history.
Orville found what their glider could do...
When they added a motor... away he flew.

We're moving fast we're off the ground...
Propellers turning... hear that sound.
Finally, we are skyward bound.
WE'RE FLYING!

What a sight to see him there...twelve full seconds in the air.
It all began at Kittyhawk and now there's airplanes everywhere!
In the year 1903,...important date in our history.

Henry Ford built a wonderful car.
On a gallon of gas you could really go far.
Because of mass production....had a price you could afford.

Built cars for less and still saved time by using the assembly line!

Wasn't made with a whole lot of power.
Couldn't go very fast... forty miles an hour.
The car design was simple... and so easy to repair.
The working man bought them... they appeared everywhere.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN...

Three Apollo astronauts each had their dream come true.
Boosted by a Saturn Rocket...up into space they flew.
The two stages separated...and then very soon
The third stage ignited...and they traveled to the moon.

With his first step on the moon, he had this to say...
"One small step for man...one giant leap for mankind"
Words that'll be remember through all time.

Into outer space they traveled...facing the unknown
Far beyond the earth...a place no man had ever flown.
The view they got from space...was an awesome sight.
The prayers of all America went with them on their flight.

‘Old Glory' with stars and stripes was there for all to see.
A symbol of our freedom and our democracy.
Russia was the first to travel into outer space,
But, USA put "man on the moon"... we had won the race.
